The two main materials used for gates and railings are wood and metal. Choosing between those is based on several factors: look, affordability, durability, ease of installation and maintenance costs. A large proportion of metal gates and railings are made from steel, with some of the period properties made from cast iron and wrought iron. Wrought iron is relatively rarely used nowadays, mostly in specific period property restoration projects.
Advantages of steel products
Custom made designs virtually unlimited, varying from complex ornate to simple and contemporary. Steel is strong and economic material. New steel gates will need a good protection from the elements, properly galvanised and powder-coated, they will serve several times longer that wooden products.
